Gut Health
All disease begins in the gut. – Hippocrates
Turns out, even all those years ago, he was on to something. Your gut is responsible for so many vital functions in the body, and disfunction here can lead to an almost endless array of health problems and challenges down the road. One of the most common (and most commonly missed or misdiagnosed!) conditions in the gut is what is called Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Leaky Gut Syndrome is a condition that is caused by tiny microscopic holes in the lining of the intestines. This allows undigested food particles, bacteria, or other toxins to leak through your intestines and into your bloodstream. These substances do not belong in the bloodstream, and that’s when it becomes a problem.
Your body will mount an immune response against these particles in the blood stream which causes inflammation, and a laundry list of problems ranging from skin conditions, to joint pain, to fatigue, to headaches, and many others. Furthermore, leaky gut syndrome is often the starting place of many auto immunities such as Fibromyalgia, various forms of arthritis, Hashimoto’s, etc. Those who suffer from multiple of these symptoms, or those who have ever been told that they have an autoimmune disease, are most likely to be suffering from Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Many health issues that are related to Leaky Gut Syndrome go undiagnosed, misdiagnosed or are completely ignored because this is not something that traditional medicine typically diagnoses. However, that does not mean it is not an issue, or that it doesn’t need addressed. Typically speaking, this is at the core or the starting place of many other conditions, therefore, if we are going to fix the end result of whatever condition or symptom you have, we have to start by fixing the cause, ie. the Leaky Gut Syndrome.
Let’s think about an analogy of a house being on fire. If your house catches fire, who do you call? Did you say the carpenter or the painter? No, because calling the carpenter or the painter at that point in time is not the first priority.
The first thing you should do is call the fire department to extinguish the fire and contain it, so it no longer spreads throughout the entire house.
The program that we use in our office is called Trust Your Gut and is aimed at reversing increased intestinal permeability, or leaky gut. The first phase of the program is called “Extinguish and Seal” because we first have to focus on extinguishing the fire. After the fire is diminished we focus on “sealing” the gaps that have developed in the lining of the gut. This is what makes the Trust Your Gut Program so much different than other programs that you may find elsewhere.

Most programs focus on detoxification right from the start. Now don’t get me wrong, detoxification is very important, but you do not want to do it from the beginning. The reason being is that when we detox first before sealing the lining of the gut, those toxins that you are removing leak back into the bloodstream. They then can resurface and cause more issues all over again. That’s why sealing the lining is so important as the first step.
After the flames of inflammation have been extinguished and intestines sealed, then the clean up process must begin. This is where we start to take care of the stress and damage from the fire.
The second phase of the program is called “Clear Debris” and it does just that. During this phase we are focused on detoxifying and removing any foreign invaders from the body that were the cause of the fire in the first place, as well as taking care of any of the damage that was previously done. Typically speaking there will be loads of toxins, inflammatory agents, microbes, and other harmful particles that all need removed. Additionally, we are now beginning to support what a natural and healthy stress response should be.
The third and final phase of the program is called “Rebuild.” At this time, we now begin to add back in the good bacteria that the body needs, as well as balance the acidity in the stomach to allow proper nutrient absorption. This is where probiotics come into play, and is usually where people start when they want a quick fix from a natural perspective. Unfortunately, as you have hopefully gathered thus far, just taking probiotics will not fix the problem. They are just one very small piece of the puzzle. Treating all aspects of the gut and microbiome together, in the right order, is what has to be done in order to get truly well.
